SIBU: Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC) deputy chairman Wong Ching Yong is asking the government to explain the status of a People's Housing Program project in Sibujaya that has been abandoned.

He said the groundbreaking ceremony for the project to build 461 single-storey houses was conducted by the then-housing and local government minister Zuraida Kamaruddin on Sept 17, 2020.

"Since this project is located within the administrative area of SRDC we have the right to hear an explanation from the ministry, especially from its minister Nga Kor Ming," said Wong at a press conference on Sunday .Wong said work on the RM92mil project started in October 2020 and was scheduled for competition on Oct 23, 2022.

Wong, who is also Dudong SUPP chairman, said 2,022 would-be residents have been affected by the abandoned project. "This project has been delayed by 960 days. Our councillors visited the project site on Saturday but it remains locked with no signs of construction work being carried out," he said, adding that this was the only people's housing program project in Sibu.
