An event was held Thursday to announce that work has started replacing Naperville yards made unuable by 2021 tornado debris.

Naperville Mayor Scott Wehrli, speaking Thursday at an event on Nutmeg Lane, lauded the groups that were responsible for spearheading the effort to secure money to replace yards contaminated with debris left by the tornado that hit Naperville in June 2021.

Work began last week to replace the yards of 66 Naperville homes that were damaged by a EF3 tornado two years ago. Top soil that's embedded with glass, metal and other debris must be removed and replaced. “My house had a lot of windows broken and we had glass everywhere,” he said. “Even after trying to clean it up ourselves several times, we’d still find pieces. Now I’m hoping next summer the kids can enjoy the yard again.”

“We can’t take away the memories of the devastation that occurred two years ago,” Wehrli said, “ we can help those most impacted create new outdoor memories.”
