‘You’ve got to have a stout heart to take it on’ PLUS Housing boss 'powerless; to prevent ‘rogue’ occupants

Keep up to date with all the big stories from across Greater Manchester in the daily Mancunian Way newsletter. You can receive the newsletter direct to your inbox every weekday by signing up right here.Slowly and methodically climbing an enormous chimney stack, Fred Dibnah pauses momentarily to clamber up onto the wooden staging that surrounds the top of the tower.

“Really you’re dicing with death with a rotten old top on the chimney. There’s been a lot of men died fiddling with them things.” Housing boss 'powerless' to prevent ‘rogue’ occupants We cover the problems with Greater Manchester’s housing stock a lot in this newsletter, but I was interested to read this from Nick Jackson, which highlights issues I hadn’t heard of before.

But Ms Kaur - who is also a psychotherapist - says she has been unable to tackle the issues despite her best efforts. “The system [of housing vulnerable people in communities] is totally broken. I didn’t realise when I got into the business of housing these people how bad the legal system is. I have been powerless to prevent this from happening and have had little to no help from the other agencies involved, including the police and the council.

Community union Acorn and charity Debt Justice say the use of bailiffs is costly and takes a toll on the mental health of people who cannot afford to pay. Richard Dunbar, a senior community organiser at Debt Justice, added: "It's a good outcome as long as the council sticks to a time sensitive review. The longer they take, the more people will suffer at the hands of bailiffs."

Bosses at First Manchester say their latest pay offer has been accepted by Unite members based in Oldham. Workers at Greater Manchester Accessible Transport have also accepted an improved pay deal - with a 10 per cent pay increase backdated to April, a £350 one-off payment for all staff and an extra day's holiday per year. GMAT also committed to signing up to the Greater Manchester Good Employment Charter to improve terms and conditions - including better sick pay, flexible working and maternity leave.

Councillors have also raised concerns that other public buildings such as gyms, swimming pools and care homes could contain this kind of concrete. It’s understood a review of all council-owned buildings is ongoing. Developer Muse and Bury Council have unveiled an updated masterplan on the future of Prestwich village with a planning application expected, as Chris Gee reports.
