As suburban sprawl radiates from cities across the country, experts say Australia needs more infill development. But building higher-density homes isn't always easy.

It's one of the many factors impacting Australia's housing crisis — the 'Nimby Paradox'.He says the paradox is when residents oppose changes that could increase housing in their suburbs, but complain when workers are priced out of an area.Professor Burton says when people can't find affordable housing, there's a ripple effect.

"If we've got 15,000 people moving to the city annually, they wouldn't do that unless they had somewhere to live," he says.He says like much of the country, the Gold Coast is not building enough homes to keep up with demand.Mr Ransom says the "flight to affordability" means people are being pushed away from the Gold Coast to formerly rural parts of Logan or the Scenic Rim, where residents face long commutes to employment, services and population centres.

"It's a colossal problem, not just in the Gold Coast," Ms Caniglia told a recent Gold Coast Open House discussion on the housing affordability crisis. He says a popular quote about Australian demographics is that "Australia was born urban, but quickly became suburban"."It's not that the suburban dream will disappear, but I suspect that fewer and fewer people will subscribe to it," he says.
