Even among the richest of the rich, a glass ceiling still exists. Of the 2,153 billionaires on the 2019 Forbes World’s Billionaires list, only 12% are women. More tellingly, while 73% of male billionaire are self-made, only 27% of female billionaires made their own fortunes.
Like Hendricks, a number of other female billionaires overcame extraordinary circumstances to rise to the top. Oprah Winfrey is the daughter of a poor, unwed teenage mom and the victim of child sexual abuse. Hong Kong’s Zhou Qunfei lost her mother at age 5 and quit school at age 16 to work as a migrant worker at a watch-glass factory.
Bakalchuk is one of 10 self-made women who became billionaires for the first time in 2019, half of whom are from the U.S. Four of the five Americans are makeup or skincare moguls. Kylie Jenner, who used $250,000 from her modeling earnings and leveraged her 175 million-plus social media fans into a booming makeup business, is the youngest of the bunch at 21 years old.
You can't be self-made when you leverage off of your family's wealth and scandals.
