A man was rescued on Tuesday afternoon after he fell into an open grave at cemetery that was about six-feet deep, South Brunswick Police Deputy Chief Jim Ryan said.

Officers received a report that the 47-year-old man had fallen into the grave at the Holy Cross Cemetery on Route 535 at 12:55 p.m. On the scene, officials learned that the victim was working on the site when a piece of wood broke, causing the fall. About two dozen first responders, including police, firefighters and EMS, worked to remove the man from the pit. Crews stabilized the area with trench panels and ground pads before a rope system was used to remove him from the grave. The victim was removed by 2:10 p.m. He was then taken to Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital New Brunswick, where he was listed in stable condition.
