Sky News Political Editor David Speers says new data revealing the economy grew by just 0.2 per cent over the December quarter, will serve to ‘sharpen up debate’. A downturn in the housing market, and severe drought are being blamed for the national economy ‘nearly grinding to a halt’.
After the figures were released on Wednesday, Labor blamed the Coalition for what it is calling a 'per capita recession'. Treasurer Josh Frydenberg has dismissed talk of a recession, and Mr Speers has agreed, saying, ‘we need to be careful about what we say here’ as the figures ‘don’t technically mean we’re in a recession'.
