ALMOST one in five pensioners could not afford to keep their homes warm this winter, research reveals. The study, based on a survey of 2,031 people, discovered that despite February's relatively high temperatures 23 per cent of those over the age of 65 were forced to ration their energy usage due to costs.

Last winter there were 379 deaths of elderly people every day linked to cold weather.
