| A surge in intellectual property theft by China has prompted an unprecedented push by leaders of the “Five Eyes” intelligence network to launch a co-operation agreement with global businesses to help fight Beijing.
The Chinese state and related companies have long been identified as the masterminds of large-scale hacking cases involving of global giants such as Microsoft and Marriott, along with government departments around the world. Beyond the theft of information and inconvenience, such infiltrations often undermined company revenue and share prices, the leaders said.
The Australian Signals Directorate’s Australian Cybersecurity Centre earlier this year called out a Chinese state-backed hacking group for a stealth surveillance campaign responsible for a series of attacks on US critical infrastructure. The Five Eyes leaders now want to bring businesses in from around the world to share more information with them to help identify threats and cases.
