The recent Valparaiso mayoral debate between Republican Jon Costas and Democrat Hannah Trueblood placed the homeless population and affordable housing as prime concerns for the future mayor of Valparaiso, with the same subject also faced earlier the same night, before current Valparaiso Mayor Matt Murphy during the Oct.

9 Valparaiso City Council meeting. The growing local homeless population was among one of the most emphasized topics posed by the audience of nearly 300 at Memorial Opera House in Valparaiso who attended the Oct. 9 Valparaiso mayoral candidate debate. The same topic faced candidates running for Valparaiso City Council the previous week, with one of the candidates being Murphy, a Republican who is running for one of the at-large council seats rather than reelection as mayor.

“Having been at the at-large council candidate debate and hearing Mayor Murphy talk about honoring veterans, I too would like to hear a response from Mayor Murphy about the veterans’ situation as well as the homeless situation, as it is not being addressed.” The remarks of Mosby and Schreiner followed a heated earlier exchange directed at Murphy by resident Christopher Pupillo, who said he also attended the Oct. 5 at-large council candidate forum.
