A former country club with 67 hectares of empty land sits in the middle of a city grappling with a housing crisis. Developers want to build on it, but opening it up for housing is contentious.

There is no shortage of golf courses on the Gold Coast — but this defunct country club could be considered pretty rare.

"These greenheart areas, once they're gone, they're gone. That's it. You've got to fight to keep them."While Mr Young's group is prepared to fight the case in the courts, the Urban Development Institute of Australia says there is a massive shortfall of residential land in south-east Queensland. "What we are seeing is … a reduced number of detached houses being delivered in places like the Gold Coast and in Brisbane, due to significant land-supply shortages," she says.

One-person households are set to increase to 40 per cent of all homes by 2045, up from 23 per cent now. That suggests those people won't need as many rooms in their homes.
