Residents and business owners have been shocked by plans to widen the arterial route to make room for rapid transit, with almost 200 at risk of demolition or having their land reclaimed.

Almost 200 homes and businesses along Parramatta Road are at risk of being demolished or having land reclaimed under a shock proposal to add an extra rapid transport lane to a vast stretch of the choked route.

The transport agency’s plans canvas a widening of Parramatta Road from Crystal Street in Petersham to Lang Street in Croydon to clear the way for a rapid transit route from Burwood to the Sydney CBD., Transport for NSW maps show a widening would eat into the boundaries of homes, shops and other businesses. The greatest encroachment of up to 10.4 metres would be in Haberfield.

Inner West independent councillor Pauline Lockie said the agency’s plans were a bolt from the blue, and would disrupt the lives of hundreds of people, including those in suburbs such as Haberfield which had been hit hard by compulsory acquisitions for WestConnex.“They seem to be contrary to everything the state government is trying to do to revitalise Parramatta Road, particularly given the community was promised a reduction in traffic once WestConnex opened,” she said.

“There are always complications. You will get back less than what you got,” he said. “We just spent big money to buy the place – we can’t move.” However, in assessing Transport for NSW’s plans, council staff say the proposal would equate to setbacks up to 10 metres, and that the affected sites would be deemed as “land reserve for acquisition” and rezoned for infrastructure.
