'I've lived all over Greater Manchester and as far as a town centre goes, you will not find much better than here'

When Andy Burton upped sticks to Ashton-in-Makerfield, he had no idea what to expect. Having grown up in inner city Salford before serving in the Army, he is a man who has seen a lot.

With a flourishing street lined with an ever-growing number of independent shops, bars and restaurants, the town is shedding its industrial past and emerging as a popular destination for families and professionals. "Ashton is on the up," he declared. "It's a nice place and I'm glad I moved here. If you look at a map of Ashton, there are lots of green spaces. There aren't many empty shops either, which is a good sign.""The transport links here are brilliant. You've got the East Lancs and you're less than a mile from the motorway. They do need a train station though.

"I always say hello to people in the street," he said. "There's a lot of the older generation here and they let on to you. "This street is the best, everyone's really friendly and helpful. We all help each other out. It's a caring community." "I love it," she said. "It's very community-based. "Everyone knows everyone and the people are so friendly and loyal. When people love a place in Ashton, they go very often.

"It's a great place," he explained. "It's quiet, it's not a massive town centre and it doesn't attract a lot of crime. I've lived here seven years and been on plenty of night outs and you don't see much trouble. According to Zoopla, the average sale price of a semi-detached property in the town last year was £192,723. On average, a detached house in Ashton-in-Makerfield last year went for £297,973 while terrace properties sold for just under £118,940.

"Every time a shop becomes empty, we think we might get a nice shop," she said. "I'd like to see an indoor market, less takeaways and more clothes shops. Three Sisters Native Reserve is just north of the town while the family-friendly Jubilee Park is a short walk from Ashton town centre. To the south is Haydock Park Racecourse, which draws in thousands of racegoers during the summer months.
