Figures obtained by RTÉ show that over 650 tenants had their Housing Assistance Payment stopped because they have fallen into arrears with their contribution to the payment

The Housing Assistance Payment is a form of social housing support provided by all local authorities.

"I offered them the €442 I owed and on the phone and Limerick County Council told me I couldn't pay it because the landlord and the HAP contract was void basically." In a statement, the Department of Housing said if the tenant does not contact their local authority or does not enter into a payment arrangement within eight weeks of the arrears the HAP payment is stopped.

Fianna Fáil's councillor in Wexford Michael Sheehan, also says the rules are unfair: "Close to 700 families nationwide would have lost their housing payment because the rules that Limerick is operating under are far too strict." Joan's landlord John Murphy says he has been left out of pocket and has not received a rental payment since November.

Should read, landlords had their HAP dropped as its the landlord who looses when the tenant stops paying the modest obligatory contribution

My HAP tenant hasnt paid their contribution in 7 months and they too owe €3500. Yet ordinary people get fined for not letting to HAP tenants ! HAP tenant has cost me a fortune re legal costs, stress , and now court. Never again and we wonder why we have a housing crisis?

campaignforleo FG said they would look via eoghan TD that they would fund and assist. Guess the dept missed the memo.

What a disgrace! Imagine expecting people to contribute financially to their housing provision! It’s shocking.
