There are significant construction delays to affordable housing scheme homes in Canberra — and participants want answers

In 2022 Casey Westcombe bought a house to be built in Whitlam through a government affordable housing scheme with the understanding construction would begin that year, but ground has still yet to be broken.

Residing in Canberra from the age of three, Mr Westcombe said he "had always wanted to be able to live a life in Canberra". After gaining access to the agreement through a Freedom of Information request he discovered it gave the developer a four-year window to complete construction on the site. "The issue here is that what they have in place needs to be advertised to the buyers so it's transparent.

"I mean we can certainly raise it, but our ability to have any kind of influence on that is really limited." "We are seeing a change to the construction industry, particularly with residential homes coming back to some normal building time frames, but we're still seeing delays, and that's unfortunately what experiencing."La Niña odds now sit at 80 per cent.
