The property includes the Guildhall, a 19th-century building that was once home to the city's Magistrates' Court, fire and police stations.

This recognised the Art Deco structure built from 1938-1940 as historically significant and protected it from demolition, forcing the council and the prospective buyers to the negotiating table.

Despite the recent inactivity and decline in the condition of the structures, they are steeped in history. The 19th-century Guildhall was once home to the city's Magistrates' Court along with the former fire and police stations and was later occupied by Nottingham City Council. The bombproof C-shaped Central Station police and fire station was built in the 1930s after the General Purposes Committee proposed an extension to the Guildhall that would provide spacious modern facilities for both services
