despite the economic downturn, rising privacy concerns and well-documented problems with installing and running devices, a new study has found.found that 7.6 million Australian homes had at least one smart device installed by the end of 2023, ranging from internet-connected fridges and washing machines, to smart speakers from the likes of Google, Apple and Sonos.
“What we’ve seen in the past is the market flooded with low-cost items, without durability built into them,” he said. “There is this natural momentum of households shifting over to smart devices when the prices are very similar ,” Mr Fadaghi said.Many Australians are still wary of devices such as smart speakers, that listen into conversations and then send those conversations back to the manufacturer when they’ve heard wake words such as “Hey Google”, “Siri” or “Alexa”.
