Pensioners struggling with record-high rental prices could soon receive relief in the form of an increase to Commonwealth Rent Assistance, the Housing Minister has hinted.

Housing Minister Julie Collins refuses to rule out increase to Commonwealth rent assistance in upcoming federal budget

This comes as the country experiences record-high immigration rates at a time when the construction of new homes is at its lowest point in over a decade, and rents are up 26 per cent. The Albanese government's last budget provided cost of living relief to Australians eligible for Commonwealth Rent Assistance by increasing the payment by 15 per cent.

"What I would say to you is that we're always looking at how we can improve cost of living for Australians." "What you saw from us in the last budget was a historic increase in the Commonwealth rental assistance or you know, the biggest increase in more than 30 years - a 15 per cent increase at the maximum rate."
