Full-time workers in England could expect to spend around £290,000 - 8.3 times average salaries of £35,100 - to get on the ladder last year.

New figures have laid bare the most affordable parts of the country to buy a home - as wage packets finally claw back some ground on spiralling prices.

Overall housing affordability improved in 237 of the 318 local authorities for England and Wales, while it deteriorated in 77 and stayed the same in the rest.
