New figures have laid bare the most affordable parts of the country to buy a home - as wage packets finally claw back some ground on spiralling prices.
Although still eye-watering, that was down from a multiple of 8.5 the previous year, according to official data. However, the national figures masked huge variations. The most affordable area in the capital still saw a higher multiple in the 12 months to September last year than the most expensive area in the North East.
Overall housing affordability improved in 237 of the 318 local authorities for England and Wales, while it deteriorated in 77 and stayed the same in the rest.
