A new report has warned Melbourne is falling behind other major cities around the globe as residents battle with rising costs and the public transport network fails to keep pace with the urban sprawl.

Melbourne's population is booming but a new report has found Victoria's capital is falling behind other global cities in key areas like housing affordability and infrastructure, with high taxes also a concern.

The report found Melbourne had a lot to crow about when it came to food, arts, sports and entertainment, with the city placed fourth for culture. "During the worst cost-of-living crisis we've seen in many decades, it's taking on average $11,000 - $16,000 a year to run a car, which is five times more expensive than taking public transport.

"The report shows Melbourne has a lot to be proud of, with our culture, healthcare, services, air quality and public space remaining some of the best in the world," he said.
