The fire began in one home, and spread to another abandoned house next door, destroying both, according to a fire department spokesperson.

A two-alarm fire broke out at 4th and E St John Streets on Tuesday, March 26, 2024 in San Jose Calif. SAN JOSE — A fast-burning fire in downtown San Jose destroyed a pair of side-by-side Victorian-era homes and damaged an occupied home at midday Tuesday.

The fire appeared to have started in a one-story home, Culbertson said. When firefighters arrived, they found the building fully engulfed, with flames making substantial headway on a two-story house next door, where the person was rescued. Pacific Gas and Electric Company shut down power in the area to over 400 people while workers made sure the area was safe, Culbertson said. According to the company’s outage map, the power was expected to be turned back by late Tuesday evening.

In a short amount of time, “you can essentially have a fast-moving fire on all floors of the building,” Culbertson said.
