Minister Eoghan Murphy said the actions being taken by government on the housing crisis were having a positive effect but said the situation continues to be 'incredibly difficult'.

Image: Leah Farrell/Rollingnews.ie Image: Leah Farrell/Rollingnews.ie MINISTER FOR HOUSING Eoghan Murphy has said the government is “playing catch up” on the housing crisis, a day after the number of homeless people in Ireland exceeded 10,000 for the first time.

“In December and January, we saw more families exiting than entering emergency accommodation,” he said. “We hoped that’d be a trend… that didn’t happen last month.” Murphy said that the government had looked at numerous measures proposed by NGOs and political parties but added there aren’t any “simple measures” that can be introduced.

“The fact they would be selling with tenants in situ would mean the property would devalue by between 20-30% potentially, so you could actually be putting them in a very difficult financial position or even into bankruptcy,” Murphy said.

Lomas sorted out the housing problem why can't you?

Is this guy for deal!! Adopting the old tactoc that if he keeps telling everyone that they're doing well we'll eventually believe it. Who's going to tell him its not working!

We don’t need to hear any more shite from this useless politician, who never knows what TF he’s talking about, and doesn’t actually care as long as that pay packet and all the lovely benefits he receives continue to roll in. BigTalkingHead

The problem with this government is the large number Posh boys and girls in this lame duck government. No sense of what is going on in the real world.

MurphyEoghan have you read this? You obviously haven’t if you think the solution to our housing crisis is more landlords!

But....what about Global Climate Change... Yizzer are all forgettin about that while yez are worryin about yer houses. Was the school kids protesting just to waste their time?!!! Tell them Eoghan... Tell them!

These politicians we have are nothing more than leaches that have no intention of actually doing the work and are just here to rob taxpayers money!! What’s it going to take for the people to actually stand up to these crooks

There's hundred of houses in my local area borded up & they could EASILY be fixed & rented out in a fortnight! Its depressing to drive by these abandoned estates, SO MANY HOUSES left sitting idle! So much depession in the community!

More landlords to force rental prices EVEN HIGHER!? How about putting all the 'empty houses' on the market & let the council RENT them out so people can have somewhere to live!? This is a deliberate squeeze of housing causing another bubble that is collapsing the economy

What they are doing is pouring a trickle of water that costs a fortune on a fire while allowing or encouraging gasoline to be spread on the sides.

It's OK though. It's not 'incredibly difficult' for him and the rest of the well off posh boys in receipt of large amounts of taxpayer's money in salaries, expenses and future pensions. It's only the peasants who are experiencing homelessness & huge financial struggle.

'MORE LANDLORDS'! There's already 175,000 of them + 270 Housing Associations 'Farming Tenants' like Human Livestock. Some of them controlling 10/20/50/100/700. 'Investment Units'/Peoples Lives/Homes. What we need is to GET RID OF FG/FF Developer sycophants From Lobster House!

Landlords don’t trust the government. It is far safer for those who can afford a rental property to buy it in a different EU state. One where the government is less reactionary and can be trusted.

Why is he still over this mess? Murphy needs to step aside and let a more capable politician handle this, he is out of his depth and he probably doesn’t give a shit either

Ideological questions, Eoghan dont you realise its FG ideology that has created the housing crisis in the first place, councils dont build houses, they buy and lease existing houses when the real problem is a shortage of housing stock and those houses & leases cost over & above.

Your obviously out of your depth, you need to reel in the landlords, even small businesses are being harassed by forcing rents so high they can no longer trade, which is the point when they just want their business !!

Not of the vulture fund variety ! The UN has rightly damned the Irish government’s encouragement of these jackals

Where’s the positives

What we need is for the local Authorities to start building again This way people availing of these houses are not looking over their shoulders as to when they are going tossed out on the street and making way for new tenants and higher rents for the private landlord.

Of course, more landlords hiking up rental prices by 100% and pushing people out of the rental market ontto the street! BRILLIANT! 👏👏😡 homelessness Crisis

Liar, Liar, Liar. Anything FG says is lies. This has been proven time after time over the last eight years and it’s not going to change now.
