Intense gunfire blaring throughout Haiti's capital city has become the norm as thick clouds of smoke fill the air, and dead bodies lie scattered on the streets. All signs of worsening gang violence are plunging the Caribbean country further into chaos.
A new report from the United Nations reveals more than 53,000 people have left their homes in Port-au-Prince in under a three-week period as gang members continue battling Haiti's national police.It's an escalation of attacks on government facilities that began back in February. So far, it's resulted in bands of criminals releasing thousands of prisoners from the nation's two biggest jails.
Says Ulrika Richardson, United Nations Haiti Humanitarian Coordinator:"5.5 million of the 11.4 population is in need of some type of humanitarian assistance." Haitians gathering in churches are praying for peace as Haitians living in the U.S. say they fear for their loved ones living under these conditions.
"I have family in Port-au-Prince who are basically prisoners in their own home," said Florida resident Cosy Joseph.
