A new report by the World Resources Institute reveals that Canada experienced a significant increase in tree cover loss in 2023, reaching eight million hectares. The rise in tree cover loss is primarily attributed to the annual fire dynamics in boreal forests. The report also highlights that the global tree cover loss increased by 24% in 2023, with Canada's fire-driven tree cover loss being the main contributing factor. The devastating wildfires not only destroyed homes and caused fatalities but also resulted in severe air pollution in parts of Canada and the United States.

, published Thursday by the World Resources Institute, found Canada’s tree cover loss hit eight million last year, up from just over two million the year prior.

While fires can be a natural part of the ecosystem in northern forests that often regrow, more intense and frequent fires can lead to permanent changes to forests, the research institute said.
