New York is poised to become the first city in the U.S. to implement congestion pricing, which could help fund $15 billion of capital improvements for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority

New York lawmakers were poised to create a congestion-pricing system in Manhattan, increase taxes on real-estate transactions in New York City and move toward a system of public campaign financing as part of a final $175.5 billion state budget deal.

Members of the state Assembly and Senate held a rare Sunday session to vote on the budget bills, some of which weren’t finalized before voting began. A budget had to be in place by Monday.

I was in London when congestion tolls were implemented with all the B&M. A year later when I was there everybody raving how wonderful. Keep the faith.

This makes sense. Uber has shown that surge pricing works. I would offer that it should be income based with folks making over $500,000 paying full fare. The lower and middle working classes have already been squeezed.

Not one penny of that will go towards improving anything in NY. It will go straight into the pockets of crooked politicians.

Remind me not to come to NYC. I don't want to put a penny in that extortion scheme; a scheme where others would be put in jail.

$150.50 for actual capital improvements by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the rest lining pockets.

And here I thought Chicago held the crown for absurd taxation.

NYC caused congestion with the bike lanes and will now charge a tax for the congestion that they caused. Compare NYS budget to the budget of the State of Florida. Why is it 2x more

And like every other time, where will all those coveted funds end up going?

Just another way to punish the poor, for the excesses of the rich.

Stupid but at least they are consistent. Will just drive more folks to low tax states.

Interesting idea, but it seems like these types of things never actually raise the amount of money that they were forecast to raise.

Hope much will congestion pricing reduce conventional tax receipts?
