Labour deputy leader Angela Rayner has denied Tory accusations over her previous living arrangements
He said it was unfair to compare Ms Rayner’s situation to the pandemic-era scandal involving former prime minister Boris Johnson, whom she called on to resign while Scotland Yard probed claims of Covid rule-breaking in Downing Street.Ms Rayner has said she will “do the right thing and step down” if she is found to have committed a crime in relation to her living situation a decade ago but remains confident she has followed the law at all times.
“What is frankly quite a minor matter before somebody even became an MP is quite different than the Prime Minister of the country, who’s told the country to observe the rules during a global pandemic, where people were dying in vast numbers every single day, where the photo evidence was there, where witness testimony was there, where he misled parliament,” the shadow local government minister said.
GMP had previously said it would not be investigating the allegations, but following the Bury North MP’s complaint, the force confirmed it had reassessed information and launched a probe. Asked about pressure on the deputy leader to publish tax advice which she says shows she followed the rules, Mr McMahon said: “My personal view is that we are talking about in this situation matter was before somebody became a Member of Parliament, let alone before somebody becomes potentially the Deputy Prime Minister of the country.”
