The Progression Unit at Mountjoy Prison has had to be repurposed for the accommodation of sex offenders because the country’s jails are overflowing with inmates convicted of sex crimes.
The surge in numbers and limitations in the capacity of these locations has forced the Irish Prison Service to repurpose the Progression Unit on the Mountjoy campus for sex offenders. However, the IPS decided last month to use the unit for the accommodation of sex offenders to manage the overflow from other detention centres. There are currently 33 inmates housed there, and this number is expected to rise.
