Campaigners who fear housebuilding near an old tip will unleash dumped toxic gases and chemicals onto a Nottinghamshire town have been left distraught after construction was approved. The Government's Planning Inspectorate approved plans for 240 homes on land off Braemar Avenue, Eastwood, on April 24, despite huge public opposition to the project which many residents feared would disturb harmful substances dumped near the construction site.
"The frightening mystery is that we do not know what is in it. People had dumped all sorts there since the 1970s so it could be anything." "We were told the public meeting would be informal but when we turned up Gleeson Homes had hired a top lawyer and we were outgunned and not prepared." The group spokesperson added campaigners were currently planning their next steps.
