Police have arrested a mother for leaving her five-year-old son unattended in a public housing flat in northern Hong Kong in the early hours of Tuesday.

The young boy approached a security guard at 3.30am in the ground-floor lobby of a public housing block in Po Tin Estate off Ming Kum Road, Tuen Mun, and asked for food.Officers later arrested a 42-year-old woman on suspicion of ill-treatment or neglect of a child.

As of 12.30pm, the woman was still being held for questioning and had not been charged. The son was taken to Tuen Mun Hospital to be checked over by medical staff. In Hong Kong, ill-treatment or neglect of a child below the age of 16 carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in jail.Figures from the Social Welfare Department showed its Child Protection Registry recorded 1,064 new cases in 2018. It is also the first time the figure has exceeded 1,000 since 2010.

Of last year’s 1,064 cases, 493 were physical, 237 involved neglect, 297 were sexual, and 11 were classified as psychological. The remainder were a mixture.Yuen Long, Kwun Tong and Tuen Mun were the black spots, recording 127, 126 and 84 cases respectively.
