Damaging winds, heavy rainfall, and flash flooding are expected to hit the South West region of WA within the next week, and authorities are concerned homes aren't ready.

Meteorologist James Ashley said winds of more than 90km/h and flash flooding were forecast, with DFES stressing the importance of preparing properties for the wild weather. The Department of Fire and Emergency Services is urging residents to prepare for the upcoming storm season and not become complacent because of WA's long run of dry conditions.

"We typically see more damage in the early stages of winter because people haven't prepared their homes," DFES Assistant Commissioner Craig Waters said. With above-average rainfall predicted, flash flooding is also more likely, as the dry ground's initial absorption capacity can lead to rapid runoff into river systems and drains.

There's also concern over the abundance of dead or dying trees across Perth and regional WA, as a result of warm and dry conditions - with fears branches could break off or fall during strong winds, potentially causing extensive damage.
