The number of Tory MPs standing down continues to rise, as Rishi Sunak and Sir Keir Starmer hit the general election campaign trail once more.

Our deputy political editor Sam Coates has just been giving his analysis of veteran cabinet minister Michael Gove's decision to leave parliament at this general election. He said: 'I think it does tell you that the political winds are shifting.'He explained that there were no indications that Mr Gove intended to make this decision, but said: 'I think he has been a little unhappy for some time about the way the government has been going, the direction of the government.

But Sam said that under Rishi Sunak, he has 'struggled to feel like he was making as big a difference in government' as previously. He went on to say that this will be 'a blow to the morale of the Conservative Party because, for so many years when the party has perhaps been a little low, Mr Gove has had the wit, the ability, and the intelligence to pick the party up again'.
