The scheme stalled after the builder's contract was terminated and it entered liquidation

Work on a Long Eaton housing development has restarted after lying derelict for a year-and-a-half. The redevelopment of the former Britannia and Portland Mills site, in Bennett Street, Long Eaton, has restarted after being vacated in September 2022, recommencing in April.

Instead of a derelict partial building site with no activity short of a security guard, there is now a full presence on the former plot, which gained planning consent for 109 homes in August 2020. Residents living in Bennett Street welcome the project restarting, saying they look forward to families occupying the houses at last, with the scheme seen as a positive change from the former derelict mill complex.

Before its conversion into a housing site, the former mill complex itself had sat derelict since 2009 following a fire. The project had fallen by the wayside after Futures Housing terminated the contract of its appointed builder, Woodsome Estates, in September 2022. Woodsome has now fallen into liquidation, Companies House details.

“We’re currently completing weatherproofing works which should be finished within the next two months. We’re still aiming for the homes to be completed by late 2025.” A spokesperson at Lovell Partnerships said: “Lovell Partnerships is currently progressing with the waterproofing contract, which runs until mid-July before commencement of main construction works.
