Toni and Billy were looking for a night of respite when they booked into a neat, if slightly forgotten, motel on a grassy plain outside Ballarat in regional Victoria.The couple, who did not want their full names published, had been camping through winter with their children at a free campsite for months."Trying to apply for houses, you always get knocked back, knocked back, knocked back," Billy added.
"If they're now being occupied by long term residents who are working residents but are unable to get into the normal private system, there's a further displacement – a domino effect," he said. Ballarat Child and Family Services team leader Ange Gale said people could end up in hotel accommodation for much longer than they anticipated.Outreach workers Ada Watson and Ayden McMahon are at the coalface of the homelessness crisis, watching over rough sleepers and working to help the desperate and the vulnerable.Ms Gale said it was becoming increasingly difficult for people to find rentals, especially at the lower end of the market.
