Construction has started on two affordable housing projects that will have 335 new homes for families and seniors in downtown San Francisco

Surrounded by soaring apartment and office towers in San Francisco’s relatively new East Cut neighborhood, Mayor London Breed joined government officials and nonprofit housing developers Wednesday to celebrate the start of construction of two affordable housing projects that will deliver 335 new homes for families and seniors.

“These projects are exactly the type of transit-oriented housing that we need to create in San Francisco to benefit some of The City’s most vulnerable residents and meet our housing goals,” Breed said in a press statement. “This is such an example of what authentically progressive 21st-century urbanism should be,” Dorsey said. “What we're accomplishing here in District Six is what San Francisco is going to look a lot more like in 100 years. “

The City will contribute $182.8 million in bond proceeds for shorter term construction loans and $134.7 million in longer term loans, said Kim Obstfeld, a senior development specialist with the Office of Community Investment and Infrastructure.

The Crossing, which will eventually be replaced by a permanent park, was established to utilize land left vacant after bus operations moved to the nearby Salesforce Transit Center, where Caltrain and eventually high-speed rail will one day terminate and make the neighborhood among the most transit connected.
