A councillor has expressed hope that proposed flood defences in Southwell, a town that has experienced some of Nottinghamshire's worst flooding, would provide residents with a sense of security. The proposal includes a 250m-long earth barrier designed to prevent water from flooding properties during heavy rainfall.
The plan involves constructing a raised earth barrier up to 2.5 metres high on land south of Southwell Minster to catch run-off from Potwell Dyke. This would safeguard homes on nearby Church Street, which has been flooded several times.A weir will be installed to slowly release any collected water and control water levels. According to planning documents, a separate application to be submitted this summer is considering the construction of a holding reservoir on the same plot of land.
After severe floods in 2013 caused more than £9m in damages, affecting at least 200 homes and businesses, some residents couldn't return home for more than a year in Southwell.
