Housing News

Northern Ireland

A survey last year found nearly half of private renters were paying 40% or more of their total income on rental payments

A housing charity has detailed their seven priorities for changes needed in the private rental sector in Northern Ireland. Renter's Voice, a group of people who rent privately and are working to make the housing situation better for everyone, use their voice to influence local politicians and landlords.

They said: "For these renters, the sector is unaffordable, insecure, unfit and unsafe to live in. A critical lack of social homes means more low-income households are turning to the private sector to live on a long-term basis. "On top of all this, renters do not have the security they need, as currently, many can be evicted at short notice for no reason. This means that many tenants are afraid to ask for their legal right to have necessary repairs and maintenance carried out or to challenge irresponsible or intimidating landlord behaviour for fear of being evicted from their home.
