In a remarkable political own goal, the NSW Liberals are working to tear down legislation aimed at Sydney’s chronic housing shortfall, but remain tight-lipped about how they will solve the crisis.
The reform was widely welcomed. Twelve of the 13 councils targeted by the Transport Orientated Development have reached an agreement with the government –the only outlier in threatening to take legal action against the plan.
“The reality is that you’re not going to lose your seat because of 10 letters that you receive a development from a few NIMBYs that don’t want it to go ahead,” Rath told Parliament last year. The Liberal plan to oppose the TOD scheme is addle-headed. The party has had months to outline an alternative but has unveiled zilch. There may be internal dissent within the party over how to tackle the housing crisis, but in the face of their reticence the Minns plan remains the best in town.
