JOHANNESBURG - The Eastern Cape government says it’s fast-tracking relief efforts for displaced families, following devastating floods in the province.
The inclement weather has claimed at least 11 lives and battered homes and infrastructure in several areas in the Buffalo City and Nelson Mandela Bay metros.Premier Oscar Mabuyane said the government was conducting an assessment of damages, and called for communities to monitor weather updates, as further rainfall is anticipated.
Similarly, Human Settlements Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi called for families impacted by the floods to be relocated and housed at mass care centres, saying a delegation would continue to visit flood-stricken areas. Cooperative Governance Department's Tsekiso Machike: “The minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Thembi Nkadimeng is leading a team of disaster relief response, following the devastating disasters that have befallen the communities of Nelson Mandela and Buffalo City Metros, together with other ministers.”
