Berea City Council at its June 3 regular meeting passed a resolution encouraging state lawmakers to do their part in controlling increases to real property values.

BEREA, Ohio – “Fluctuations in property tax assessments directly impact property owners, and high valuations lead to increased tax burdens,” the Berea resolution says. “These increased tax burdens directly affect senior citizens, families with children, those on fixed incomes and those with mortgage tax escrow accounts.”

It goes on to note some Ohio counties undergoing property reappraisals have experienced 40 percent hikes, and higher, in taxable property values. “ hereby supports and urges the Ohio Legislature to move H.B. 187 forward, making changes to the law governing real property valuation,” the resolution concludes.

Council President Jim Maxwell said the objective is “to help control the spike in our residents’ property taxes.” “We’re always concerned about our senior citizen, lower income and disabled populations, so we support this to maybe get some movement in the House,” Finance Director Andrea Morris added. If you purchase a product or register for an account through a link on our site, we may receive compensation.
