Brian Luckins, another owner, has a newspaper clipping from the era when then lord mayor John Chandler called the houses “dog boxes”. Luckins is now leading a fight for legal changes to make sure homeowners are compensated if heritage is imposed on them.Local councillor Steven Griffiths was initially in favour of the “temporary local planning instrument” – before he found out how intensive it was.

Parish priest Dang Nguyen described the building as a “dump”, and estimates it would cost $700,000 to fix, which they don’t have. The 700-strong parish now can’t hold youth events, doesn’t have a parish hall and had to move their office.A hall owned by Our Lady of Fatima church has been heritage listed, despite being described by the parish priest as a ‘dump’ that cannot be used.“This hall has already been condemned. So we’re not allowed to use it.
