John Howard Society of Ontario finds people with a history of homelessness and involvement in the justice system say police, courts are a factor in loss of housing

A survey of people with a history of homelessness conducted by the John Howard Society of Ontario found two in five people who responded cited police and courts as the reason for their loss of housing.Ontario’s justice system is a leading cause of surging homelessness in the province, according to a new survey by Canada’s leading prisoners’ rights organization set to be released on Tuesday.

Last year, a Globe analysis of provincial jail data found that the proportion of people being released into homelessness had nearly doubled between 2016 and 2022 – from 8.8 per cent to 17.3 per cent. “People entering incarceration often lose their employment income, social supports, medications and identification,” the report states.
