The Gauteng department of human settlements wants South Africa’s major banks to write off millions in debt owed by indigent homeowners on bond repayments.
Khoza said his department was collecting data to determine the prevalence of indigent families losing their homes to debts. He said it was not clear how widespread the problem was in Gauteng, but that the complaints the department had received suggested the issue was urgent. “Basically, what we want is to sit with the banks, deal with them and have them write off some of those debts.”
