Sunrise's Nat Barr has grilled the Albanese government over its housing plan which is designed to build 1.2 million new homes in five years, arguing Labor is"well behind" on its targets. It comes as the federal government has pledged $1 billion in funding to states and territories in a bid to boost housing supply.
“Only 163,000 new homes were commenced in 2023. You need 240,000 each year to reach your target. You're well behind. How is this going to help?” Barr said. Deputy Opposition Leader Sussan Ley, who also appeared on the show, argued the federal government was not “out of the blocks yet” despite being voted in two years ago.
“Labor has brought in more migrants last year than at any time in Australia's history. We have a housing crisis … what we have to do is get back to basics,” she said.
