On Thursday, Moab got .6 inches of rain in 15 minutes — down from the inch they got last Friday, but it was still enough to cause flooding and damage.
Back-to-back weekends of storm cleanup had some people and even the mayor wondering if this is the new normal and what can be done to fix the problem. At nearly 11 p.m. Thursday night, Tim Miller was outside his restaurant on Main Street cleaning up after the storm.Other businesses on Main had sandbags at their entrances or even closed up shop early because of Thursday’s storm.Two flooding events in a week only made them more worried.
“I wouldn’t be surprised if in my lifetime I see a wall of water 10 feet tall coming through town,” Miller said.It was relatively dry Friday, but on Thursday night, it had two feet of water in it.Just like Miller, she was up late cleaning.Significant flooding rushes through Moab streets “I think they need to get their engineering and figure out how to get their storm water to be current with our climate now and what can happen,” she said.“We’re going to have to do some really serious planning on how we’re going to manage the Millcreek drainage through the middle of town,” Langianese said.“I don’t know what it’s going to look like in the future.
