It would become the fifth parking lot in the city of San Diego designated for people who live in their vehicles as part of aThe city of San Diego has contracted with the nonprofit to run four sites at Balboa Avenue, Aero Drive, Mission Village Drive and Rose Canyon. San Diego Unified would lease the parking lot to the city free of charge, Barrera said.

It’s clear the school district is ready to have the secure parking lot. But comments from city officials suggest it’s unclear if and when they will proceed with plans for a lot on the campus. More than 6,400 students enrolled in San Diego Unified this past school year were considered homeless — and that number is likely an undercount. Homelessness takes different forms, and it could mean students and their families are living in a shelter, in a vehicle or doubled up in somebody else’s home.

The district has also for years been working toward offering more permanent housing relief for its employees by leasing land to developers to build apartments. At least half of the district’s workforce housing will be set aside for teachers.
