It is the earliest storm of Category 4 strength to form in the Atlantic, fuelled by record warm waters. The US National Hurricane Centre said the storm had been upgraded to Category 5 status late on Monday while Grenada's Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell confirmed one person had died.

"Beryl is expected to remain an extremely dangerous major hurricane as its moves over the eastern Caribbean," the National Hurricane Centre said.
