Police called to Kelton Avenue Tuesday to contact a man waving a knife found a suspicious device in his car that prompted nearby homes to be evacuated

A suspicious device found in a car parked in La Mesa Tuesday morning — near where officers earlier arrested a man carrying a knife and what appeared to be a handgun — prompted several homes to be evacuated until the sheriff’s bomb squad determined it was not dangerous, a police official said.

The 36-year-old man, who is a relative of someone who lives on the street, was taken into custody. He was sought on a felony warrant and faced other charges, Lynch said. Out of an abundance of caution, police called the bomb squad to come check out the device. Several homes in the area were evacuated and a section of Kelton Avenue was closed to traffic.
