Figures released to RTÉ News show that local authorities spent more than €125m last year buying new homes from private developers

The volume of turnkey purchases, which are bought directly from private developers to house social tenants, is being criticised by opposition politicians, and housing campaigners.

"I think there is a need to put a greater emphasis on building rather than buying. There is substantial publicly owned land and we are not building on it." It added that there are areas where a local authority may not have land in places suitable for social homes and turnkeys offer "a good solution in this scenario".

Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council paid more than €5 million for a development of 14 apartments and houses in Monkstown. The average price of the homes acquired was €406,000. Six of the units are one-bedroom apartments.

'The cost for the local authorities to build is far less.' And the proof of this is?

125m...1.7b children hospital 🤔

It's really good. More house for social people. It's very good the council investing for the social people...

How much did they spend paying builders to build houses on council land and how many were built.

Man idea could they spend that money building more homes rather than taking from private supply?
