Downtown Seattle could soon have more housing and less commercial space.

The city’s land use committee on Wednesday is expected to vote whether it supports converting the surplus of vacant commercial office space into as much as 2,000 additional units of housing. The proposal would allow for changed zoning codes to make these conversions happen. That means non-residential buildings can be redeveloped to residential use in a commercial, downtown, Seattle mixed, high rise or midrise zone under specific conditions.

Another proposal would convert the Smith Tower to include everything from studios to two-bedroom units.
