Residents fed up with broken bottles, noise and finding urine outside their homes say Stonnington Council is putting business before amenity after they ignored their own staff recommendation to scrap an outdoor trading area of a Chapel Street pub.
The City of Stonnington recorded 35 complaints about The Wolf Windsor in the last 12 months, which one staff member described as a “very high” number compared to similar late-night venues. Susan Louey lives halfway up Eastbourne Street, her home of 19 years, and has resided near Chapel Street for more than four decades but says she has never experienced the problems she now faces.“I didn’t used to have people urinating on my house and leaving rubbish here, and I didn’t feel unsafe walking down my street,” she said.Louey said the outdoor seating changed the environment because it invited people to enter the residential street.
“This isn’t going to be solved … residents have had enough and should expect a reasonable level of amenity.”“ already live with a much lower level of amenity than just about anywhere in Melbourne and they’re asking us to do something that’s pretty simple.”“The’re not a bunch of NIMBYs moving in next to a hip, trendy live music venue then complaining about the noise,” Morgan said.Other councillors argued they should consider other enforcement options before jumping to removing the permit.
